About The Gower Pilgrimage Way

Welcome to the Gower Pilgrimage Way

Discover the beauty and heritage of Gower, the first area in the United Kingdom to be designated a 'National Landscape' formally referred to as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Renowned for its stunning landscapes and coastal views, Gower is a perfect destination for walkers and nature lovers alike.

'What is a pilgrimage, you might ask'

At the Wonder of Wellbeing, we believe that pilgrimages are sacred journeys. Traditionally that might include a religious journey, but increasingly could also include:

  • Ancestral Pilgrimages: Journeys exploring heritage and family roots. Pilgrims may visit ancestral homes seeking to connect with their personal history and cultural identity.
  • Spiritual Pilgrimages: These invite personal growth and spiritual exploration. They can include Nature Pilgrimages as well as Wellness Pilgrimages.
  • Cultural Pilgrimages: These involve visiting sites of cultural significance, such as historical landmarks, festivals, or events that resonate with a person's identity or beliefs.
  • Specific Routes and Trails: Pilgrimages follow routes that have been travelled for centuries. For example, the Gower Pilgrimage Way.

Pilgrimages serve as profound journeys that connect individuals to their faith, culture, and personal history. Whether through traditional routes or modern interpretations, these journeys offer opportunities for reflection, healing, and spiritual growth. Each type of pilgrimage holds unique significance, enriching the lives of those who undertake them.

In May 2022, the Gower Pilgrimage Way was officially launched—a 50-mile route that connects 14 historic churches within the Gower Ministry Area. As you journey along this path, you’ll also encounter numerous chapels, sacred Christian sites, and other remarkable historical landmarks that tell the story of faith and community across the centuries.

The route begins in Penclawdd, in the northeast of Gower, and winds its way around the peninsula, concluding at St Teilo’s Church in Bishopston, in the southeast. Whether you walk the entire pilgrimage or explore sections of it, you’ll experience breath-taking scenery, rich history, and a sense of spiritual connection. Gower is the first area of the United Kingdom to be designated a 'Natural Landscape' formally an Area of Natural Beauty. It's a beautiful place to visit, and a fantastic place for walking.

You will also pass many other historical sites along the route, including several chapels and other Christian sacred sites.

The route runs from Penclawdd in the North-East area of Gower, going around the peninsula, and finishing at St Teilo's Church in Bishopston in the South-East.
